FORUM ON THE PEACEFUL USES OF CHEMISTRY: POTENTIAL CONTRIBUTION OF THE OPCW TO THE ACHIEVEMENT OF THE UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS THE HAGUE, THE NETHERLANDS 23 OCTOBER 2018.

Third edition of the Forum on Peaceful Uses of Chemistry. The theme of this year’s forum is the “Potential Contribution of the OPCW to the Achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs). Your exchange of experiences will serve as a basis for promoting the peaceful uses of chemistry for the contribution to sustainable social, economic and environmental development. Global peace and security is the foundation on which sustainable development rests. The OPCW’s founding goal of ridding the world of chemical weapons is a direct contribution to securing a peaceful world (SDG 16 – Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). As the custodian of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), our work reaches far beyond disarmament. As this event demonstrates, the OPCW is firmly committed to fostering the development of chemistry for peaceful purposes as provided for in Article XI of the CWC. Our support for chemical industry development, free trade in chemicals and the open exchange of information and knowledge about the peaceful application of chemistry helps our States Parties develop industry and drive innovation (SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure). To ensure the achievement of this core objective at national, regional and global levels, the OPCW is running a wide spectrum of tailor-made and on demand capacity building activities and programmes. Our work in this area also promotes cooperation among stakeholders in legal, scientific, military, law enforcement and other spheres. Our near universal membership (193 Member States) facilitates effective partnership building among stakeholders around the world (SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals). This forum demonstrates how the OPCW uses its global reach to promote international solidarity and cooperation to advance in sharing the benefits of chemistry for the safety and wellbeing of all. There are many complex and global challenges that require the full mobilisation of the best and the brightest. Chemistry has an important contribution to make in terms of solutions to these challenges, from climate change to peace and security. Through this forum, I hope you will benefit from sharing your experiences and ideas to build partnerships and explore synergies in line with the SDGs. Supporting the peaceful uses of chemistry is critical for creating a safer, more prosperous, more equitable and peaceful world. Together, we will raise awareness of the importance of capacity building in this area and seize this opportunity to build international solidarity on this critical issue.
