Edited by an industry insider, this book focuses on realistic chlorine free organic synthetic pathways and presents sustainable, breakthrough technologies in Green Chemistry.

The rationale behind this book is to present useful and industrially relevant examples for alternatives to chlorine in synthesis. Environmental constraints and efficient energy usage impose to develop new chemical strategies. Chlorine compounds find use in a number of important commercial products that contain and do not contain chlorine. Because of the negative impacts of chlorine and other halogens on global environment and health, alternative synthetic pathways which adopt a holistic and proactive approach may provide new products and processes. Since the industrial revolution, chlorine remains an iconic molecule even though its production by the electrolysis of sodium chloride is extremely energy intensive. This multi-authored volume presents numerous contributions from an international spectrum of authors that demonstrate how to facilitate the development of industrially relevant and implementable breakthrough technologies. This volume will interest individuals working in organic synthesis in industry and academia who are working in Green Chemistry and Sustainable Technologies.

Chemistry Beyond Chlorine

The book (XXIV + 608 pages) is the outcome of the IUPAC Project N° 2013-057-3-300: “Chemistry Beyond Chlorine” and is edited by Pietro Tundo, Liang-Nian He, Claudio Jose de Araujo Mota, and Ekaterina Lokteva. It is being published by Springer (ISBN: 978-3-319-30071-9; DOI 10.1007/978-3-319-30073-3).

Pietro Tundo is Full Professor of Organic Chemistry at the University of Venice and at Politecnico of Milano. He is IUPAC Bureau Member and Chair of IUPAC Interdivisional Committee on Green Chemistry for Sustainable Development.

He has published over 200 scientific articles, one book, and holds twenty-five patents. His research on Clean Processes led to the development of Gas-Liquid Phase-Transfer Catalysis, a method for the synthesis of Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs.
