Mario Marchionna

Mario Marchionna is currently the Head of Technology Governance & Reporting of Saipem SPA, a leading company in the engineering, drilling and construction of major projects in the energy and infrastructure sectors both offshore and onshore, and has full responsibility for all the technology portfolio of the Saipem Group, worldwide.

He joined Saipem in June 2013 where he covered in the previous years, till to 2022, the position of Corporate Head of Technology & Innovation. Previously (2004 – 2013), he has been Vice President of Application Development and CrossBusiness Projects in the Research & Technological Innovation Department of Eni, the well-known Italian-based Oil & Gas & Energy company. He was also the focal point of Eni in the field of CCS (CO2 Capture and Storage) representing Eni in international projects together with other O&G companies.
Previously he managed other units in Eni such as Intellectual Asset Management and Corporate Research Planning and Control.

He spent about two years at EniTecnologie (2002 - 2004), as responsible for the Emerging Energy Applications Department managing till to October 2004 R&D programmes regarding Energy Carriers (especially Hydrogen), Fuel Cells and Renewables (especially photovoltaic).

In Snamprogetti (1986 – 2002), another engineering company of the Eni group, he spent most of his career as a researcher at first and very soon as a research group manager, contributing to the development of novel processes in the fields of fuel components production (Methyl-ter-butyl-ether, MTBE, and its derivatives but also oxygenated components for diesel fuels) most of them having been demonstrated on commercial plants, natural gas conversion (hydrogen production by catalytic partial oxidation of natural gas, and heavy residues hydrotreatment where he gave a decisive contribution to the EST Technology development, successfully developed in large scale plants in Italy and then in other countries worldwide.

As a researcher, he filed 42 parent patent applications and published 130 scientific papers, including chapters of encyclopaedia for Ullmann and Treccani, and about 150 communications at congresses.

He holds a master degree in Chemistry, awarded by the University of Milan and a Ph.D in Industrial Chemistry, awarded by the same University and the Polytechnic of Milan.

He covered different roles in the Italian Chemical Society, presently he is the President of the Industrial Chemistry Division and Vice-Director of the “Chimica & l’Industria”, official journal of the same Society. Associate at the American Chemical Society since 1996.

He is also a member of the Technical Committee of the conferences organized by the DGMK together with SCI (Italian Chemical Society) and the Austrian ÖGEW.
